Community Service in Action: Duet Partners in Health & Aging
For more than 10 years, Desert Financial has supported Duet’s program to assist grandparents raising their grandchildren.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, there are now more than 2.6 million grandparents raising their grandchildren in the United States, and these numbers continue to rise. Many children start living with a grandparent because of a parent’s change in circumstances. A job loss or deployment can create a temporary need, while some children are placed with grandparents for years due to a parent’s substance abuse problem, incarceration, mental illness, divorce or even death.
Grandparents often struggle with the physical, emotional and financial strain of becoming the primary caregivers for their grandchildren.
Duet offers services to help grandparents with their needs, as well as support for the grandchildren. They offer counseling on benefits and services, educational workshops on a variety of topics, and legal guidance and assistance.
Most important, Duet offers grandparents the opportunity to connect with others through ongoing support groups and special “grandfamily” outings.
In addition to this program, Duet offers programs and workshops to support family caregivers and coordinates a large volunteer program to help homebound adults.
If you or someone you know could use any of Duet's services, check out their webpage for more information. If you are interested in volunteering, see how you can help homebound seniors in your neighborhood who need assistance with grocery shopping, medical appointment transportation, computer training or a friendly home visit.
Duet Partners in Health & Aging is committed to helping improve the quality of life for older adults throughout the Valley. We’re happy to support their efforts and help grandparents succeed in their roles as caregivers.
