Community Service in Action: Children Win Bikes Through Poster Contest
Children living in affordable housing communities recently won bikes donated by Desert Financial Credit Union. Students participating in a summer program through Native American Connections were asked to create a poster board with the theme “This Is Who I Am” to share words, art or pictures describing their hobbies, culture, family, goals, strengths and more. Each student was then asked to present their poster and explain how their artwork represented them.
Emma Garcia, AVP of Community Relations at Desert Financial, was a member of the review panel and helped present the bikes to the winning students. A few months ago, some of our Desert Financial team members purchased, assembled and donated more than 40 bikes to children and young adults who live in affordable housing communities.
“It was exciting to see the children encouraged to dream big, be courageous, and to believe in themselves,” Emma said.
In addition to the bikes, Desert Financial also donated funds to purchase bike helmets and locks. The owner of a local bike shop was also on hand at the event to provide an overview on bike safety to the winning students.
The students all live in affordable housing communities that are run by Native American Connections, which serves individuals and families of all ethnic backgrounds. Their housing and wellness programs help hundreds of families every year, and Desert Financial has supported Native American Connections since 2012.
Through our partnership, Desert Financial provides financial education workshops for residents and property managers in the affordable housing communities, and coordinates budgeting programs for participants in NAC’s substance abuse recovery programs.
“The bikes were a great reward for children’s hard work and effort,” Emma said, adding that the students immediately took their new bikes for a ride on the playground once the event wrapped up.
