Pennies Are Going Away: What You Need to Know
Effective February 2, 2026
The U.S. Mint is no longer producing pennies. As a result, starting February 2, 2026, Desert Financial will no longer provide pennies as change. Here’s what that means for you — and how we’ll help make the transition easy.
Why are pennies going away?
The U.S. Mint has stopped making pennies, and banks and credit unions will no longer receive them. This change is happening nationwide.
When does this start?
Beginning February 2, 2026, we’ll stop giving pennies as change for cash transactions.
Can I still use pennies?
Yes. You can still use pennies for deposits and payments. We just won’t be able to give pennies back as change.
What if my change would normally include pennies?
You’ll have a few simple options to choose from:
- Deposit the difference into your account (if you have an account).
- Add coins to reach the nearest $0.05 increment.
- Request a new check from the issuer (in increments of 5 cents).
- Donate the difference to support the 1 Darn Cool School at Phoenix Children's.
You’re always in control of which option works best for you.
Will amounts be rounded up or down?
No. We won’t round amounts automatically. You’ll simply choose one of the options above.
Does this affect electronic transactions?
Not at all. This change only applies to cash transactions. Electronic payments stay the same.
Do I need to do anything now?
No action needed. Just keep in mind that pennies won’t be available for change starting February 2, 2026.
